SERVICE PROJECTS

YMCA SPECIAL SCHOOL FOR THE MENTALLY CHALLENGED

YMCA Special School for the Mentally Challenged is functioning at Ellisnagar since the year 2000. This project emerged as a highly need based Initiative when children with hearing impairment were found with multiple problems and Intellectual Impairment. Over the years, a number of children with multiple impairments from very low income families have been supported by the YMCA. The school offers residential facilities for children from far off places.

Currently this special programme provides opportunities for 100 children with intellectual Disabilities such as Down's syndrome, Autism with mental retardation, cerebral palsy, microcephaly and other types of mental disabilities ranging from mild to severe levels. Basic academic skills, daily living skills, sensory trainings, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and computer skills are offered for the children with the support of trained professionals and special educators. Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychologist play a vital role in our rehabilitation team.

Training in candle making is offered for the students and training in banana fibre and jute products making is offered for the mothers of our children. Children friendly classroom environment and play facilities adds colour and value to the special schooling.
